Berry Bits: DHS says Glendale shelter is no longer in the works

Rumors about the future of 78-16 Cooper Avenue started swirling about just after New Year, when Glendale residents feared that repair work on a water line meant that construction of the proposed homeless shelter at that location was underway. Council Member Holden quickly shot the rumor down by posting a copy of the DOT street opening permit that clearly stated the work was for emergency purposes. Two local papers, the Times Newsweekly and Queens Chronicle, then followed up with the Department of Homeless Services who said that they and Samaritan Village were no longer considering the site for a homeless shelter. This was welcome news to all those in the community who fought so hard to prevent a shelter at this inappropriate location.
