Things That Are Dumb: M train service falters hours after being restored

On April 30, Middle Village M train riders rejoiced after enduring eight months of construction which forced their one seat rides into 2 or more seat rides (which for some really unfortunate riders also included shuttle buses). However, around noon, J and M service came to a grinding halt after a newly installed switch malfunctioned at Myrtle Avenue. Trains were stranded on the Williamsburg Bridge for more than half an hour. MTA crews had been on standby as a precaution, and service was restored in about 40 minutes. While the switch malfunction was frustrating, one of the main causes of subway service disruption is antiquated signals. New York City Transit Chief Andy Byford supports a new project to revamp them at all 472 subway stations at a cost of $20B but it's anyone's guess where the money will come from.
