Shining a spotlight on new Maspeth businesses

The long awaited Patrizia's should open in October

What makes for a successful community? A safe, clean area where residents regularly patronize its commercial corridors. This year, Maspeth has seen a variety of new businesses looking to set up shop here. We'd like to introduce them to you and wish them the best of luck.

The current ownership took over Three Sons Pizzeria upon the retirement of Tommaso Izzo, who owned the place for 40 years and gave them his blessing and best wishes. They hope to make WB Pizza successful for another 40 years.

Grand Barber Shop

(347) 361-6702

Owner's Name: Usimon

This 7-day-a-week new business provides barbering services, such as cutting, trimming, shampooing, and styling hair, trimming beards or giving shaves.

Maspeth Marketplace

66-17 Grand Ave

(718) 476-8000

Owner's Name: Joe

Manager's Name: Nick

Opening date: 6/1/18

This store is an expansion of the Key Food store across the street, with a focus on organic products.

Key Food

66-56 Grand Ave

(718) 205-7700

Owner's Name: Joe

Manager's Name: Nick

Opening date: 6/1/18

Hours: 8am-9pm 7 days a week

When Duane Reade vacated their property, the owner of Key Food supermarket saw the opportunity to expand. With a much larger indoor space and a nice-sized parking lot, the decision to move across the street was an easy one.

(929) 349-1066

Owner's name: Michael

Opening date: 5/2/18

Hours: 11am-11pm daily

Michael chose Maspeth because he likes the town and there were no other ice cream shops around. He says the community has been very supportive. Surely, they were nostalgic for the classic Carvel store down on 64th Street which was unfortunately demolished many years ago.

El Pollo Real

69-51 Grand Ave

(347) 730-6258

Owner's name: Norma

Opening date: 8/4/18

Mon-Fri 6am-10pm

Norma chose Maspeth for her Spanish restaurant because she likes the town and its people. She reports that the business is doing great so far and is getting a lot of support from the community.

74-25 Grand Ave

Opening date: 4/28/18

Mon-Fri 5:30am-10:30pm

Sat 6am-10:30pm

Sun 6am-10pm

Maspeth was one of the few communities without a Starbucks and a shopping center with a vacancy. The choice was therefore clear.

In the future:

Bake A Bagel

60-94 Flushing Ave

(718) 326-2197

Projected opening date: September 2018

Hours: to be determined

Will accept cash & credit cards

The part of Maspeth west of the LIE did not have a bagel shop and a lot of money and construction was put into filling that void. We eagerly await their opening.

69-35 Grand Ave

Owner's Name: Tony

Projected opening date: October 2018

Hours: To be determined

Will accept cash & credit cards

Will offer delivery

Patrizia's has made a name for itself with locations in 4 of the 5 boroughs as well as NJ and LI. The last uncharted territory for them is Queens, and they chose Maspeth for their first location in the borough! A family-owned full-service Italian restaurant is just what Grand Avenue needs.

Maspeth Rx Pharmacy

69-45 Grand Ave

(718) 433-9227

Owner's name: Robert

Projected opening date: September 2018

Hours: to be determined

Will accept cash & credit cards

Will offer delivery

This new pharmacy is taking the place of a 99-cent store. Maspeth will have one more location where you can get your prescriptions filled and pick up other medical supplies. It's nice to have options!

Home Depot

59-02 Borden Avenue

Opening date: to be determined, possibly in 2020

Hours: to be determined

Will accept cash and credit cards

Coca-Cola vacated their bottling plant back in April. The site was purchased by Home Depot, which has plans to demolish the plant and construct a retail store there. The site is 7 acres, so there likely will be a lot more businesses sited on the property in the future. We'll keep you posted.

In addition to these fine Maspeth businesses, we'd like to call attention to a new bagel store opening on Eliot Avenue near 80th Street.

Middle Village Bagels

79-16 Eliot Avenue

(718) 457-8936

Owners' names: Joey, Richard & Frank (of Barosa's)

Projected Opening Date: September 2018

Hours: To be determined

Will accept cash & credit cards

A great new bagel store is just what Eliot Avenue needs. The store will offer water-boiled bagels, hot & cold sandwiches, a salad bar, hot dishes and catering.
