Things That Are Dumb: Abysmal turnout for early voting

After political declarations that early voting would bring our elections into the 21st Century and allow more people to vote, boosting turnout, the sad reality is that only 1.14% of voters took advantage of it this past election cycle. Those who did vote early were greeted by a sea of election workers with not much to do. The NY Post reported that City taxpayers paid $9 million to have black cars deliver Board of Elections workers to various early voting sites. In the November general election, less than 20% of NYC voters cast a ballot. One of the ballot proposals this year included ranked-choice voting, which means a whole new ballot will have to be designed by 2021 to accommodate this effort to eliminate costly runoff elections. We are all for expanding access to the polls, but many of these measures dedicate a fortune to accommodate the relatively few citizens that come out to vote.
