A New York & Atlantic locomotive literally ran out of track in Maspeth in early October. No one can seem to explain why the rail abruptly ended near 60th Lane, but the conductor obviously was unaware of the condition. The aftermath of the derailment left about 100 gallons of diesel fuel poured onto the trackbed. Luckily, no one was injured. But someone needs to explain why there was a train running on tracks that stop where they shouldn't. Civics United for Railroad Environmental Solutions (CURES) expanded on the local implications on their Facebook page: Spilling petroleum into the environment has an impact. When it rains... this pollution is carried down storm drains to water bodies — rivers, bays, etc. Also, the tracks are wrecked... And there were emergency vehicles and operators working for hours. So besides dealing with their noise and odor, we also have to worry about whether the trains will stay on the tracks.
