After the Storm

Hundreds of people had gathered at Juniper Valley Park on the evening of August 7th to enjoy National Night Out when the skies opened up. This time there was dangerous lightning, exploding transformers, downed trees, power and phone outages and wire fires across the area. Two men were hit by lightning in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. To many it felt like Armageddon. And perhaps worse than the storm was the aftermath. Flooding affected many homes in the Middle Village, Glendale, Maspeth and Ridgewood communities. Floodwaters rose about 2 feet near Maurice Park. The Cooper Avenue underpass filled up with water quickly, swallowing up a car. These weather events are happening more frequently and we need to pay close attention to weather reports, remain prepared and heed warnings issued by the NYC Office of Emergency Management.
