Buttah: It's a family affair

Kristin and Stacey Viola

Christ the King alums are living the sweet life

Sisters Kristin and Stacey Viola are the owners of Buttah, a popular Ridgewood bakery located across the street from St. Aloysius Church on Onderdonk Avenue. Both are Christ the King alumni with Stacey having graduated in 2003 and Kristin in 2004. The siblings have taken traditional family recipes to the next level. Supporting their endeavor and working alongside them is their mother, Jo Ann, the friendly face that usually greets and serves customers.

Baking is a tradition in the Viola family and the ladies loved it so much that opening their own bakery was a natural choice. It started as a hobby for Kristin, who then transitioned into selling cupcakes from home. Although the sisters grew up and still live in Williamsburg, they found it too difficult to open their dream business there. When they crossed the border into Queens, they found a receptive market as well as a community that felt like the Williamsburg of their youth. Buttah was launched at the end of 2015 and quickly became a hit with locals and the after-church crowd. Kristin is the master baker and Stacey oversees the finances of the business. Buttah supports another local business by using honey from Glendale's Wilk Apiary in some of their recipes.

Although cupcakes are their main product, they also serve wonderful cookies, bread pudding, muffins, coffee cake and banana bread. If sweet is not your thing, you can try one of their scone varieties. There is a selection of vegan and gluten free items daily. They offer special themed items as well, like red-white-and-blue rocket cupcakes for July 4th, Irish soda bread during March and sausage stuffing squares during the Thanksgiving-Christmas season. You can pre-order traditional pies from them around the holidays, too.

There are certain cupcakes available year-round, like scrumptious red velvet, the decadent Brooklyn Blackout (a chocolate lover's dream) and yummy Funfetti (great for a party). But then there are the eagerly awaited seasonal cupcakes, such as my personal favorite, lavender-lemon, which gets rolled out every spring. My husband asked me last year what kind of cake I wanted for my birthday, and I replied without hesitation, a lavender-lemon cake from Buttah. The ladies didn't disappoint. This may be the best thing I've ever tasted! one of my guests exclaimed during our family get-together. We've brought Buttah's summertime strawberry shortcakes and cupcakes with us on trips and to BBQs, and now friends and family from out of town make it a point to stop into the store whenever they visit us.

They recognize that when it comes to tasty treats, it's hard to do it bettah than Buttah!
