Things That Are Dumb: Sign switch by summer

In February, after months of threats, the Federal Highway Administration announced that it would fine New York State over the placement of unauthorized "I Love NY" signs along state highways. Governor Andrew Cuomo quickly announced plans to replace the signs that would have cost taxpayers a $14M penalty. ͞Existing materials will be reused but, as the signs will be redesigned for the new campaign, we will consult with (federal highway officials) during this process,͟ Acting Transportation Commissioner Paul Karas and Thruway Authority Director Matthew Driscoll said in a joint statement. Shouldn't they have done this in the first place? It would have saved a lot of money and headaches. FHA rejected the plan before the signs were installed, citing safety, as they were deemed to be a distraction to drivers. The new signs will be put up this summer.
