We are told to make an appointment and to then place refrigerators at the curb for freon removal. However, of late, DSNY has not been taking all units. They will place a sticker instead that states, “This appliance contains R600A or R32 refrigerant. DSNY does not service or collect appliances containing R600A or R32 refrigerant. Please contact the manufacturer of this appliance or a refrigerant removal vendor for options to safely dispose of this appliance. This item must be removed from the curb immediately.” The refrigerant is flammable, which is why they do not want sanitation workers handling it. But there is no option other than hiring someone to remove it. Get ready for more dumped appliances at the side of the road. If the buyer knew about this before they purchased the item, they likely would have opted for a different model. Make sure you ask before you buy a new appliance!
