Dear Editor,

Those living near Maspeth High School heard the pounding of heavy equipment breaking up the concrete in the schoolyard. Work went on all day until 9:30 at night for a week. There were no notices or work permits placed in front of the school.

Finally, after calling Councilman Wong’s office, they called the School Construction Authority (SCA) and found out it was a project approved when Councilman Holden was in office. I wonder why a school just over 10 years old needed a new schoolyard?

The SCA has done this before with work projects at nearby schools, I.S. 73 and P.S. 58. No work permits or notices to the community until neighbors complained. The SCA must be reined in and follow the laws as everyday New Yorkers do; they are not above the law even though they think they are.

I’d also like to mention that the once majestic fountains of the Unisphere as well as other fountains in Flushing Meadow Corona Park have been dry for three years after flooding destroyed electrical components. Visitors have been left with one fire hydrant to cool off on hot days.
