One of the most breathtaking vistas in the area can be taken in at the Metropolitan Oval. It is believed to be the oldest soccer field in NYC and possibly in the US. Originally founded as a for-profit soccer club in 1925 by local German and Hungarian immigrants, it quickly became a dust bowl from overuse. By 1998, the field’s owners owed NYC $476,000 in back taxes. The property was about to be auctioned, but a non-profit foundation was created to save it and completely renovated it into a top-notch facility. Today, soccer players from all over the world continue the competitive tradition started 100 years ago.
