In a recent issue we presented a look at the history of Elmhurst Hospital Center, from its original construction on Welfare Island in 1830 up until its move to Elmhurst, Queens in 1957. Today Elmhurst Hospital Center is a modern 513 bed facility serving a population of approximately one million people throughout the most ethnically diverse neighborhoods of northwestern Queens. Elmhurst Hospital is a Level 1 Trauma Center with staff specially trained to respond to any type of an emergency, including Bio – Chemical Accidents and the hundreds of Motor Vehicle and Pedestrian Accidents, occurring each year on such local roadways as the Long Island Expressway, Grand Central Parkway, and Queens Boulevard.

We share a prestigious affiliation with Mount Sinai Hospital and are ranked among the top 3% of hospitals in the nation by JCAHO -The Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Health Care Organizations.

If you haven't visited Elmhurst Hospital in the last few years, you're in for a pleasant surprise. The hospital recently completed a $250 million modernization project. The old green city tiles and patient “wards” have been replaced by private and semi-private rooms, state of the art Intensive Care Units, Operating Rooms, Birthing Rooms, spacious patient and visitor lounges, private consulting rooms and Hospice.

Elmhurst Hospital Center is a community hospital center in the true sense of the word, since many of our staff live in the Elmhurst, Maspeth and Middle Village areas and many have been working at the hospital 20 years or more.

Staff of Elmhurst Hospital are frequently seen at local health and street fairs and visiting neighborhood schools and Senior Citizen Centers teaching Injury Prevention.
With the help of Bob Holden of the Juniper Park Civic Association and his students at N.Y.C. Technical College, the hospital has taken on a project to alert drivers to the dangers of Running Red Lights. Posters designed by the students are currently displayed throughout the hospital and the program was recently written up in the American Trauma Society National Newsletteer.
