The Juniper Park Civic Association is proud to announce that one of our own, Dr. Margaret M. Magnus, has been selected Woman of the Year for the year 2000. Margaret received her award from Borough President Claire Shulman in a ceremony at Borough Hall last month.

Margaret is a Queens resident and homeowner for thirty one years She earned her graduate degrees at The Catholic University of America–Master of Science in Nursing and a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration.

She has been employed as a nurse educator for over thirty years, twenty-five of which as a Professor of Nursing at Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing, City University of New York.

She has been very active in organizational work within CUNY, including President of The Faculty Delegate Assembly at Hunter College. Since her retirement from CUNY, she serves on the Presidential Advisory Commission of New York City Technical College (CUNY). She also serves on the Executive Board of the Alpha Phi Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau, Inc. the international nursing honor society.

Within the community, she is an active member of Community Board 5, and serves on Health and Human Services committee and The Library committee. Dr. Magnus also serves as an Executive Board Member of the Juniper Park Civic Association and is a regular contributor to the Juniper Berry magazine, especially on issues relating to quality of life for the elderly, literacy, and educational needs of children. Of special concern: transportation, health, and safety needs of older, medically disadvantaged people, and transportation and literacy needs of children, including well-funded library systems. She has a special fondness for concerns relating to the health needs and quality of life for immigrants.

Community activism obviously runs in the family. Her husband is Joe Magnus. Vice President and sparkplug of the Middle Village Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
