We congratulate Catherine Klein on her 99th Birthday on August 25th. Catherine is the wife of the late Arthur Klein who served as the second President of the newly formed Juniper Park Civic Association back in the Civic’s early years. Her daughter, Virginia Klein Havriliak was the Director of Religious Education at Our Lady of Hope for over 30 years. Catherine Klein and her family have a wealth of history and roots in our community and as she celebrates her 99th Birthday we wish her many more happy years in our neighborhood.

Sergio and Louisa Gennari opened up their beautiful house in Middle Village to a pool party inviting the entire JPCA Executive Board. It was pretty much a packed house with everyone “chilling” out from the busy life of serving on the JPCA Executive Board. There was delicious food prepared by Louisa and Sergio making the rounds making sure everyone was comfortable and having a good time. This party was a Summer of 2010 winner and their Middle Village house is a beauty! Thanks for a great time, Louisa and Sergio!

It was a banner year for the Juniper Park Summer Concert Series for 2010 sponsored by the NYC Department of Parks and the Juniper Park Civic Association with seven concerts scheduled from the beginning of July to the end of August. Despite the oppressive heat the concerts were on schedule with the exception of one rainout on Big Band Night. We did manage to have Italian Night, Country and Western Night, German Night, “Doo Wop” Night, Classic Rock Night and Irish Night. Residents brought their lawn chairs and literally listened to great music under the stars. Yes, we’re already booking for the Summer 2011!

Our Lady of Hope welcomed a new priest to its Pastoral Staff recently. His name is Rev. Peter Purpura, Parochial Vicar. We look forward to meeting Rev. Purpura and we wish him the best of luck at OLH Parish

Good news to the “Korner” from Patrick Trinchese, JPCA Executive Board Member, he and his wife, Michele, are expecting their first little Juniper Junior around Christmas 2010. Congratulations, Patrick and Michele, and be sure to send us that “debut” photo from your little Junior!

The Learning Tree in Middle Village had its Annual Bake Sale recently and raised $550. Abe Shampaner, Owner and Director of the Learning Tree, advises that the School donated the entire sum of $550 to the Middle Village Volunteer Ambulance Corp. This is another generous contribution from the Middle Village Learning Tree. We thank Abe Shampaner and the Learning Tree for their generosity and we know MVVAC will put the money to good use in the neighborhood.

Congratulations and Best Wishes to Maria Gualtiere and Omar Lorenzo who tied the knot on August 8th. Maria (Pace), former graduate of Our Lady of Hope, and Omar have been residing in Middle Village and have chosen to continue to live here, following the footsteps of Maria’s parents, JPCA members, Jeanette and Tony Pace who have lived in Middle Village for 40 years!

Our very own Tony Nunziato, JPCA Officer, has decided to run for the Assembly seat for the 30th Assembly District. Tony is bright, energetic and has been a neighborhood super volunteer for many years. We wish Tony the best of luck in his goal of becoming our Assemblyman from the 30th AD!
JPCA Executive Board member Vinnie Borzumato and his wife Elaine celebrated their 45th Wedding Anniversary recently and to mark the occasion they took a trip to Calabria, Italy. Congratulations Vinnie and Elaine and we wish you many more happy years together.

Anthony Rizzo, former Parks Department field Director for Shea Stadium, sends this to the “Korner,” – “Our Lady of Hope 4th grade softball team finished their season undefeated with a record of 14-0 and won both of their playoff games to become the 2010 CYO Diocesan Champions!” Great news, Tony, Congratulations to you and the girls. Your photo of the team is included in this notice. We must also thank Anthony Rizzo for painting the white lines in the softball field near the handball courts. Before he was good enough to do this on his own there were only makeshift lines on that field. Thanks, Anthony for your great volunteer efforts.

Former JPCA President Joann Benini and her husband Ezio had their Annual Grill Fest at their house. Their son Stephen, was the chef and the delicious food never stopped coming off the grill! What a festive event this annual party has become. Everyone had a great time and Ezio is looking great after his recent health issues. Stay well!

Congratulations to the St. Margaret’s CYO Boy’s Intermediate Division of Middle Village who clinched the Diocesan Championship on June 21 against the boys from St. Luke of Whitestone. The Dragons of St. Margaret’s finally captured the elusive title after being in the championship game in 3 of the past 4 years. After battling each other over the past 5 seasons resulting in an identical win – loss record, the Dragons emerged victorious by a score of 6-3. Despite the near 90 temperatures, pitcher Dylan Lawrence was able to keep the hard-hitting St. Luke team in check by striking out 13 batters while only walking 2. Offensively, everyone contributed, coming up with timely walks, hits or bunts, allowing the team to put together one run at a time. One of the offensive highlights was from 1st baseman Dylan Lanigan who after bunting his way for a base hit, scored an exciting run by stealing home.
