Middle Village inhabitants believed the day of resurrection had come when they heard bugle calls and sounds like Gabriel’s trumpet last Thursday. They stuck their heads out of windows and became frightened when they saw the skies illuminated, and the light drawing nearer. It was only Engine Company No. 7 from Middle Village, in the shape of sixty cheering “fire laddies” in a torchlight procession, headed by a big brass band.
They were marching to the Grand Hotel to congratulate Richard Niederstein, the assistant foreman of the company, on his twenty-eighth birthday. Chief David Avenius tendered congratulations on behalf of the firemen, who cheered lustily. Mr. Niederstein was presented with a handsome clock-regulator by the company and received many presents and floral gifts from his friends and relatives. Employees presented him with a large floral horseshoe.
Among the guests were Charles Aichman, John Welz, Anton Scholl, Frank Ibert, Seb. Hoffmann, John R. Cut, John Fieber, Fred Eick, Mr. and Mrs. John Reimers, John Niederstein, Louis Niederstein and famlly. The Arion Singing Society of Middle Village was also represented. George Ehlenberger sent a telegram from Bermuda. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Niederstein gave a spread and many toasts were heard during the evening.
