The NYC Council’s Progressive Caucus plans to make “universal daylighting” a legislative priority this fall thanks to a billionaire-funded anti-car lobbying group, and the latest survey of council members indicates they have the numbers to pass it. This would remove 20 feet of parking from every intersection citywide. The average car length is 14-16 feet, meaning 4 parking spaces at every corner and 16 at every intersection will be lost. Meanwhile, the NYCDOT thinks this is a terrible idea. For one, it doesn’t necessarily make an intersection safer, and 4-way stop signs can often eliminate collision risk more effectively than daylighting. “Hardened daylighting,” where boulders and other barriers are installed, are more effective, but would cost more than $3B to install, which DOT is not budgeted for.
