This is quite a busy scene! The caption for this photo says, “Highway maintenance removing sand washed down on Queens Blvd at Woodhaven.” So how did we determine which direction this points in since absolutely everything in this photo is no longer in existence? Look at the one-way arrow on the tree in the background. That is Hoffman Drive. The trolley cars are a dead giveaway. The same area serves as the terminus for several bus lines today. Horace Harding Hospital, later to become St. John’s Queens Hospital, had not yet been constructed. The corner had traditionally been used for automotive purposes. After the gas station, it became a tire store and now awaits its next chapter. Interesting to note that horses were still being widely used for transportation. Perhaps the most interesting change is the style of dress. This photo was taken August 13, and the men are all wearing long sleeves, with some wearing jackets. The recent photo comes from Google Street View because a photographer could not stand in the same spot to take a photo due to the volume of traffic and configuration of the intersection today. Hoffman Park was constructed after the Long Island Expressway was completed and provides respite from all the havoc.
