We hope everyone is enjoying their summer as we quickly approach the end of the season. We would like to take this time to inform our neighbors of trends we have seen within Maspeth and Middle Village.
Throughout the 104th Precinct, we are reporting an increase of overall crime by 3.1%for the 28-day period and an increase of 6.9% for the year to date. For Middle Village, more specifically, we have seen an overall decrease of 2.8 % for the 28-day period and decrease of 1% for the year to date. Moving over to Maspeth, we have seen an uptick of 23.5% for the 28 day period. For the year to date we have an increase of 7.4%. As you know we cannot do this alone, community and policing go hand in hand, and we hope to continue working together to report and prevent crime.
The 104th Precinct has made substantial progress toward reducing vehicle storage on our streets by conducting several tow truck operations throughout the year. Our Ro-Tow Officer, Police Officer Anthony Lamicella, has collaborated with a number of city agencies, including the Department of Sanitation, the Department of Consumer Affairs and Worker Protection, and the NYPD Transportation Division. We have towed 463 vehicles so far this year, including both derelict and commercial. Your concerns are our priority, and we expect to tow over 600 vehicles this year!
We wish to bring to your attention the numerous concerns surrounding mail theft and the use of United States Postal Service relay mailboxes. We respectfully request that members of the public refrain from utilizing corner mailboxes. These mailboxes are vulnerable to tampering and theft by individuals seeking to access personal information contained in the letters. While it may require a minor adjustment, we recommend that individuals visit their local post office and personally hand their mail to a postal employee at the counter for the utmost security. We kindly ask that you avoid using the mailboxes located in front of the Post Office, as they are frequently targeted by thieves.
We continue to advise everyone to be vigilant of their surroundings and personal items. Please don’t leave any valuables in your vehicle and keep it locked. As we have repeatedly stated, do not leave your vehicle running with the keys inside, even if only for a second. If you plan to leave for the summer, consider employing timer switches and keeping valuables in a safe deposit box. If you see or hear something, call 911 or submit a police report to the station. The more we know as a community, the more effectively we can address a problem.
