Valuable Websites to Visit

As everyone knows the internet is a world of information. One of the most informative and valuable websites you can visit is nyc.gov and clicking on to “View a Restaurant Health Inspection.” This will enable you to check the cleanliness or lack thereof of your favorite restaurants. If you like to eat out occasionally, or often, this website is a valuable and enlightening tool for you to see the result of the latest restaurant inspection. You will discover that some restaurants pass with flying colors while others are virtual pigpens, replete with vermin and shoddy food handling issues. Sadly, some are even cited for getting their shellfish from unreliable sources. This is an extremely dangerous practice and it rolls the dice with our health. There's a laundry list of problems that some restaurants have and if you check them out before you patronize them the dirty ones will get their act together. Remember, an informed consumer is a smart consumer.

Another excellent site to visit is trustmydoctor.com. This site enables you to check out your doctor's qualifications before you make an appointment. Also, very importantly, the site lists the disciplined doctors. There are over 3,000 doctors on the list and I have to tell you we were quite surprised to see that the urologist we were using is a star on the “disciplined” list.

Familiarize yourself with both these websites. You will find it will give you a wealth of knowledge and you will be more astute in the marketplace that is fast becoming a treacherous minefield.

Info for the Health Conscious

This arrived to us via e-mail. On WCBS-Channel 2 this morning a Dr. Edward Fujimoto from Castle Hospital appeared on the program. He is the manager of the Wellness Program at the hospital. He was talking about dioxins and how bad they are for us. He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers. This applies to foods that contain fat. He said that the combination of fat, high heat and plastics releases dioxins into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body. Dioxins are carcinogens and highly toxic to the cells of our bodies. Instead, he recommends using glass, Corning Ware, or ceramic containers for heating food. You get the same results without the dioxins. So such things as TV dinners, instant saimin and soups, etc. should be removed from the container and heated in something else.

Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper. Just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc. He said we might remember when some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper. The dioxin problem is one of the reasons.
