The Juniper Park Civic Association held our annual holiday party and raffle on Thursday, December 13th, 2007 at Our Lady of Hope Auditorium in Middle Village. The civic association used this occasion to welcome in our 70th anniversary year.

A brief video about the Ridgewood Reservoir was shown. JPCA is joining the fight to preserve the 23-acre forested habitat in the reservoir's basin #3. The parks department has indicated that they intend to remove the trees and lay down synthetic turf for ballfields. The video may be accessed here. If you wish to be involved with this project, please e-mail ridgewoodreservoir@gmail.com

Captain Keith Green of the 104th Precinct gave a report about recent crime in the precinct and year-to-date statistics. Those stats may be viewed here.

Councilman Tony Avella brought up the fact that public schools display two symbols, the menorah for Judaism and the crescent moon for Islam, but not a nativity scene for Christians, which the councilman says is a double-standard.

After the councilman spoke, the slate of officer and board nominees for the 2008-2009 term was approved by the membership.

Then the food was served. Special thanks to Pioneer Supermarket on Grand Avenue for donating two 6' hero sandwiches & salads and to Eric Skae and Clem Daly of New Leaf Iced Tea for supplying free samples of their organic iced tea.

Raffle prizes were donated by local merchants and most of the people who braved the cold dreary weather in order to attend went home winners.

The Juniper Park Civic Association wishes everyone a happy and healthy holiday season and we look forward to serving our communities in 2008.

Christmas Raffle 2007
by Lorraine Sciulli

I would like to thank the committee for all the work they did in getting the gifts. No question, they pounded the pavement and they contributed to the success of the Raffle. The Raffle Committee members were Lu Sadowski, Ed Kampermann, Bob Doocey, Joyce Beaudoin, Tony Nunziato, John Killcommons, Lee Rottenberg and Theresa Riley.

The following is a list of the Raffle donors. Many of them are advertisers in the Juniper Berry and I always characterize them as the Neighborhood “Good Guys.” These are the businesses you should be supporting all year long because they support the Juniper Park Civic Association and the work we do in the community. Thanks everyone and Merry Christmas to all.
