The 20 or more trees located on a triangle of land abutting PS49's schoolyard were expeditiously cut down on Friday, November 2nd by the School Construction Authority, even though an SCA representative had assured Community Board 5 member Steven Fiedler days earlier that they would not be touched.

A new school is being built in the parking lot. The old school will not be torn down after the new one is completed.

There is nothing left of the triangle of trees now except stumps and a pile of wood shavings. In recent years, the spot had several picnic tables on it and had been used for passive recreation and outdoor lessons.

The School Construction Authority has not yet presented any preliminary architectural plans for the new school to be built on the site.
