The New York City Department of Sanitation has issued a Winter Operations Advisory for Wednesday, March 9th, beginning at 6:00 a.m. A Winter Operations Advisory is the Department’s “lower level” winter weather message, as opposed to the “higher level” Snow Alert.
Following warm temperatures earlier in the week, snow is expected throughout the day Wednesday. Accumulation on pavement is not likely, but a coating to two inches may accumulate on unpaved surfaces. This could lead to slick, dangerous conditions and impact the collection of trash and recycling.
The Department is filling salt spreaders to pretreat New York City’s roadways, and more than 700 will be active across the city throughout the weather event as needed to prevent icing conditions. Liquid brine will be placed on certain roadways and protected bike lanes to limit the amount of snow accumulation. The Department is prepared to deploy plows in every sector in the unlikely event of roadway accumulations over two inches.
Open Restaurants may continue to offer outdoor and roadway dining throughout this event. Restaurants with roadway seating should be aware that DSNY equipment may spread salt on the roadway.
Residents should continue to follow their normal collection schedule for trash, compost and recycling, though delays may occur while the Department is in snow operations mode.
Alternate Side Parking regulations and parking meters will operate as normal.
The Department is coordinating with other City agencies on snow clearing protocol in accordance with each agency’s written snow plan. All relevant city agencies have been notified and the Department will continue to monitor forecasts as the snow event approaches.
