Arbor Day is an unofficial holiday observed in all 50 states of the United States for the public planting of trees. It is most often celebrated on the last Friday in April. This year Arbor Day is Friday, April 27. J. Sterling Morton of Nebraska City, Nebraska established Arbor Day in 1872.

Street trees make any neighborhood beautiful and actually increase property values, to say nothing about their huge contribution to our environment. Mayor Michael Bloomberg has stated that he wants 1,000,000 trees planted in NYC over the next decade. To put that number in perspective, Central Park has about 20,000 trees, so, that 1,000,000-tree goal gives you an idea of the magnitude of the planting project.

I can tell you that when I was looking to buy my house in Middle Village I can recall refusing to even look at a house on a block that had no street trees. Somehow a block with no trees is like that day without sunshine. Arbor Day is a recognition of the huge contribution trees make and I can’t imagine why anyone wouldn’t want a tree in front of their house particularly now, since NYC is attempting to plant sidewalk friendly trees so damage is kept at a minimum.

For the homeowner, Arbor Day is an excellent opportunity to take stock of the trees on your property and plan for the future. Inspect your trees. Note any broken branches or evidence of disease or insect infestation. Think about how planting new trees might improve the look of your property or provide wind or heat protection. Use this Arbor Day, April 27, 2007, to welcome a tree into your world.
