The Democratic primary for mayor of New York City was thrown into a state of confusion when the Board of Elections retracted their initial report on the vote count. BOE withdrew data that it had released June 29 which they originally had claimed was an accurate accounting of the first-round votes. After candidates questioned the tallies, it was discovered that the machines had not first been cleared of test ballots and the dummy ballots were included in the tallies. The entire counting process was redone, and new results were released. There were many who were skeptical of ranked choice voting and this snafu did not help dispel their concerns. It also did not make sense to release results before the absentee ballots were tallied because they also needed to be ranked as part of each elimination round.
