A 28-year-old homeless woman, whose last known address was in Chicago, allegedly left a path of destruction in Maspeth this past April 13. Shaniqua Fort was charged with arson and attempted murder along with lesser charges for her fiery rampage down Flushing and Grand Avenues. According to police, she started by setting fire to a floor above 888 Kitchen at 60-92 Flushing Avenue. Two occupants had to punch out a window and leap for their lives to escape the flames, resulting in injuries that hospitalized them. The fire destroyed their apartment. She then set fire to flags displayed outside D’Angelo Funeral Home at 64-18 Flushing Avenue and proceeded to pick up a brick and throw it through the glass window of Allstate located at 65-02 Grand Avenue. Her path of destruction ended at the Maspeth Jewish Center at 66-64 Grand Avenue where she threw another object through a window and started a fire in a dumpster in an alley. She was arrested shortly after. Some responding firefighters were sent to the ER for various injuries. This woman seems clearly deranged and should have been in a mental hospital rather than on the streets, but NYC decided decades ago that it prefers chaos.
