We’ve all seen the footage of the car takeover that took place April 18 at 69 Street and Eliot Avenue. One hundred people in dozens of vehicles gathered at the intersection to watch a bunch of reckless thrill seekers cause havoc. Two suspects involved were soon arrested, but thanks to bail reform had to be released. Judge Indira Khan spoke out against it during Asil Assaidi’s arraignment: “I believe the facts in front of me shows that this defendant poses a significant danger to society. I am very appalled by the alleged nature of this case and the potential for greater harm; however, my hands are tied.” Assaidi was charged with reckless endangerment, which is classified as a low-level felony. The 2020 bail reform package prohibits requiring bail for misdemeanors and non-violent felonies. The judge did order that Assaidi enroll in a supervised release program. He was seen on video after his release joking about how he has a second car so he has no worries. Thank you again, former Governor Andrew Cuomo and soon-to-be gone State Senate Majority Leader Michael Gianaris for improving perps’ quality-of-life at the expense of our communities.
