This year marks the 112th anniversary of the sinking of the General Slocum. The ship caught fire and sank in the East River on June 15, 1904, killing more than 1,000 passengers. The event was the biggest mass casualty in NYC history prior to 9/11. Many of the dead were buried at All Faiths Cemetery, where a monument is dedicated and an annual memorial ceremony takes place. This year, the ceremony will happen on June 11th at 9am. Featured speakers include Dan Austin, Sr., Chairman of All Faiths Cemetery and Dan Austin, Jr., President of the All Faiths Restoration and Beautification Program. Ed Shusterich, founder and president of Pullis Farm Cemetery Historical Landmark, and Christina Wilkinson, founder and president of the Newtown Historical Society, will be honored for their community service at the ceremony.
