PS/IS 49 celebrated its official opening of the new addition on Saturday, Oct.18, 2009 at the school. Everyone squeezed into the very large auditorium to hear School Principal Tony Lombardi introduce the various speakers including School Chancellor Joel Klein, who made a great speech about the American Dream and where it always starts, with a good education. Also introduced as invited guests were our very own Bob Holden and Lorraine Sciulli representing the Juniper Park Civic Assoc. It was a great event that we will all remember for years to come.

On Sunday, October 18th the Reverend Michael A. Carrano, pastor of Our Lady of Hope RC Church was installed in a ceremony celebrated by the Most Rev. Joseph M. Sullivan DD, Retired Auxiliary Bishop of Brooklyn. We wish Reverend Carrano a spiritual and productive term as pastor of Our Lady of Hope Church.

Juniper Valley Park had its annual bocce tournament on Sunday, October 11th. Our very own Juniper Valley Park team came in second. We congratulate all the teams for being such good sports and entertaining the people with this popular tournament.

Terry and Theresa Arlotta became the proud grandparents of Terence John born on October 19th. Terence’s Mom and Dad are Terry and Stacey who live in Philadelphia. Terence John’s great grandmother is Tessie Lattanzio, a former JPCA Executive Board member. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL!

Congratulations to Elizabeth Crowley on her victory for City Council in the 30th CD. Elizabeth was very busy campaigning on Halloween as seen here with all the young voters of the future. Good Luck Elizabeth!!

Congratulations are in order for Middle Village resident, Joe Pfeifer who was recently promoted to Assistant Chief of the NYC Fire Department. Joe is also the Chief of Counter Terrorism and Emergency Preparedness for the NYC Fire Department. You may remember the name of Joseph W. Pfeifer from 9/11. He played a key role on that day in the rescue operation when the World Trade Center was attacked. We are proud to have you, Joe, as a long time resident of Middle Village and we wish you the best of luck as you go forward with your career of service to the people of New York.

On Saturday, September 19th, there was a joint Block Party with 77th Street and 60th Road in Middle Village. The big day began with a “Meet Your Neighbors” breakfast at 9am, went through the afternoon with all sorts of activities and ended around 10pm that night. The activities included rides for the kids, a magician, cotton candy machine and a great DJ who kept the place rocking throughout the day. Everyone agreed, the Block Party was a great success and will be repeated in the summer of 2010!

Long time member and JPCA auditor, Josephine Lume, gave the following report to Killy’s Korner –
It was another spectacular year for the Our Lady of Hope Hornets 8th Grade girls’ soccer team! The girls scored 42 goals in an undefeated season this year. The team continues to impress their proud parents and spectators with a strong forward and centerline and fierce defensive lineup, along with their impressive passing skills and teamwork. Playoffs and championship games will be held in November. Our Lady of Hope student, Luke Renda, celebrated his 10th Birthday recently with a big party given to him by Martine and Bill, his Mom and Dad. Happy Birthday, Luke, how did you get to 10 so fast?

Under the leadership of our very own JPCA Officer, Bob Doocey, and with the dedicated help of park volunteers, Flo Bennett and Pete Polonski, the JuniperJuniors responded to the call for volunteers to clean Juniper Park on Saturday, October 24 at the Pullis Family Cemetery. Juniper Valley Park was designated the “Cleanest Park in the city” recently and that honor is due to the quiet efforts of these volunteers. The youngsters from Cub Scout Pack 106 from Trinity Lutheran Church, along with their parents, came out also to help the regular volunteers. Aren’t we lucky to have such great kids who work so hard to keep their neighborhood clean? You can bet that when they grow up they’ll be the JPCA leaders of tomorrow!

A Special Birthday celebration for Middle Village resident, Virginia Hummel, was held on October 11th at “Mother Kelly’s,” a restaurant in Cedarhurst, Long Island and was attended by family & friends. Photographs were displayed from Virginia’s childhood days to the present, as Grandma of seven. Happy Birthday, Virginia!

Congratulations to Glendale resident, Michael Miller who was sworn in as Assemblyman from the 38th AD on Sunday Nov. 1. Mike was our colleague on CB5 for many years and now he moves on to the State Assembly to try to get that legislative body in some kind of fiscal shape. Good Luck, Mike, you’ll need it!

JPCA Executive Board member, Angelo Raneri and his wife, Josephine, are expecting a little Juniper Junior in March of 2010. We wish them all well and we can’t wait to hear if it’s a little Junior boy or girl!

How lucky is Middle Village resident Andrea McGoldrick? She celebrated her special milestone birthday with two parties, one on October 16th and the other at Abbraciamento’s on Oct. 28th. Then it was off to LasVegas for Andrea to continue the celebration! Happy Birthday Andrea!

It’s looking like 77 Street and 60 Road in Middle is the “in” place for celebrations that bring everyone out to participate. In fact, let’s call it the original “Killy’s Korner!” Not only did they have a “killer” Block Party in September but Halloween was another great celebration with ghosts, witches, clowns, gremlins, you name it, in full costume. It was great to see the kids enjoying themselves in such a safe environment and the adults looking like they’re having even more fun than the kids! You should have seen the creative costumes, especially Betty Killcommons in her clown outfit, complete with wig and make-up! HYSTERICAL!

Little John Thomas Waterlou had his fourth birthday on Nov.20th. John is the son of Middle Village residents Mary and John Waterlou. Happy Birthday, John Thomas, and we know you really enjoyed that Birthday Cake!

Even the Cross County Bank got into the swing of things for Halloween with a big party at the Eliot Avenue branch in Middle Village. The theme was the Fabulous Fifties with Ken Mayer, bank employee and Antonella Longo dressed as “Danny” and “Sandy” from the movie “Grease.” Customers were given milkshakes and candies popular in the Fifties. Pictured here are Jessann, Ken, Diane who wore a Poodle Skirt, Gladys, Veronica, Antonella (“Sandy”), Eileen, Cathy and Mike, all Cross County employees. A fun time for all and a lighter moment in these difficult times!

Gunrail Service Station, Juniper Berry advertiser, and owned by Middle Village resident Gunther Duy and his partner, Ralph Barone, will be having their annual Christmas Party this year on the afternoon of Friday, December 18th. Gunrail's Christmas Party is always a fun time for all with old and new friends coming together to celebrate the season. Gunther and Ralph are two neighborhood good guys and they wish everyone out there a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
