A Cute Little Mouse

A cute little gray mouse caught in a glue trap stuck.
It wriggled and screamed for dear life.
I felt empathy.
How cruel was this deceptive device?
to trap a little baby mouse in glue till death!
So, I extended my hands.
to lift it up and out and free it from its doomed plight.
At first, he tried to bite me.
but then he poised to let me proceed.
He realized I was helping him.
Gently I lifted it one leg at a time from the death trap.
Its big eyes stared at me at first in fright.
and then adoration as if to say thank you.
I lifted one leg at a time.
but first I had to secure the trap to the floor.
before I lifted my little Walt Disney friend.
It seemed to understand as I gently lifted it up and then set it down.
It was soon free as it jumped out of my hands like a bat out of hell.
Then it stopped paused and turned as if to say, “Thank you,”
and it ran through a hole in the wall.
I was happy it was free.
After all, what harm could it cause me?
So, it went east, and I went west, and we both lived!

Desert Feline

A white cat wades, sinks in the sand.
Its footprints fade with each step,
washed away into a drift,
blown into infinity.
As it lifts, its legs up and out.
Confronting a vast terrain over the dunes,
as the sun blazes, burning ice light,
and the sand weighs down.

Tiger in a Rose Bush

Rainbows and lightning,
surrounded beauty,
hidden danger,
mixed scent,
flowers and death.

Not Up a Tree

In the Fall, or Winter of 2023,
a squirrel made its home,
in my air-conditioner unit,
alongside the compressor and evaporator coils.
This little brown– black bushytail, frisky,
and furry friend
created his nest, habitat in my window!
It is composed of weeds, grass, hay,
compacted to make his home, and of course
a dozen nuts.
So neat, orderly, and cozy,
I did not want to disrupt, or disturb it.
So, I went out to purchase a new air-conditioner for another window.
Now, the squirrel has a new home,
and I, a new air-conditioner
We both live happily ever after.

My Cat Asparagus

He’s a standup cat: stretching his body,
morning’s exercise.
Scratching a door frame as if in a dance.
Eating berries on trees, playing, chasing leaves,
blowing in the wind,
rubbing, tickling his cold nose on the vine.
His marble green eyes twinkle in the Sun.
His black fur glistens.
His white fur, snow soft, shines.
He rolls in the wind, jumps, runs after clouds.
Chasing bubbles pulls on a thread,
he sits, stares at birds in flight for hours.
Fish in the pond,
sleeps on a log.
Speeds like an arrow after his shadow:
Rolls jump for a fly sits under a tree
in the cool of the shade.
He cuddles on my lap.
He is my child,
ready to play, eat, sleep, share affection.
He’s licking himself.
Stealing my heart.

Electra

Ambling,
She walks into the wall.
She is juiced up,
Ready to run the wires.
She will cause the days to go dim.
She will force the nights to glow.
She will cause the bulbs to burn brightly.
She will buzz like a fluorescent light.
She will heat up.
Soon she will blow out.
