As of November 12, 2024, the New York City Department of Sanitation enacted a containerization mandate. Currently, a warning period is in effect, but as of January 2, 2025, the following fines will be enforced for non-compliance:
• First offense: $50
• Second offense: $100
• Third and subsequent offenses: $200
The rules apply to all properties in New York City with 1-9 residential units. The bins must be 55 gallons or less and have a secure lid. The rule only applies to regular waste, not recycling. Organic waste still goes in brown bins.
