Cardinals represent different things to different people, but there is no doubt that they are very closely associated with the holiday season. Cardinals got their name from the red vestments worn by Roman Catholic Cardinals. They stay in the winter when other birds move on. The color of the male appears extra striking during the colder months while the female displays a muted tan color with red highlights. They eat mainly winter berries this time of year but will favor sunflower seeds when offered at feeders. Photo by Steve Fisher
