An FDNY Rescue truck racing to a fire in Jamaica the day before Easter made a turn and struck a cyclist, killing him outside Juniper Valley Park. This was horrific for the victim’s family as well as the FDNY members involved. This is a tragedy and obviously not something dumb. The dumb part came after police told the media that the victim was in his 50s. Someone who claimed to be a witness had taken to social media and stated that it was a teenage boy who was killed. So, an online mob called the police liars and accused them of a cover-up. Why they thought the police would be able to cover up the death of a child is a good question. No school has announced the loss of a student, and no parent has come forward and claimed that their son was killed. Police confirmed with JPCA that the victim was an adult. Social media has its positives, but rumors and accusations are two of the downsides.
