It will come as no surprise that the NYC Department of Investigation has found shady business going on at 51 nonprofit organizations that operate homeless shelters and receive city funding. DOI reportedly found it to be a family affair, where those in charge hired their friends and relatives for high paid positions. They also found many conflicts of interest, lack of oversight in how money was spent, and questioned how CEOs were compensated. We have been spotlighting this all along, while shelters were allowed to continue to operate in the shadows for decades. Council Member Holden has again called into question the goings on at the Cooper Rapid Rehousing Center run by Westhab since the shelter sees hundreds of emergency calls and dozens of arrests every year. Surely our money can be spent better if this is the current result.
