It’s a tale as old as time: snow falls and sidewalks connected to government property are not cleared. This season it was particularly bad because we had an extended freezing period. DSNY was threatening homeowners with fines within a few days of the storm, yet there were a lot of properties owned by the City or State that weren’t shoveled and turned to ice. It’s also the City’s responsibility to clear crosswalks and pedestrian ramps. Bus stops with shelters are overseen by DOT but their contractor was asleep at the wheel and passengers had to climb ice mountains to board the bus. It’s been a while since we had conditions like this, but the blueprint for handling them shouldn’t have been forgotten.
