The Christ the King Math Team has come a long way since its humble beginning 4 years ago. Starting with just 6 students the 40 member team is now a force to be reckoned with!
In 2011 the Math Team finished 11th out of 206 schools in the New York State Mathematics League Competition and was featured on NY1 news as the “Queens People of the Week.” But that was just the beginning. Under the leadership of the Math Team’s popular moderator, Middle Village resident Mr. Richard Hartman, the team is currently tied for 1st Place in the 2012 competition and is expecting to win the entire competition which comes to a close this March 2012.
Principal Peter Mannarino shared his praise for the team, “As a Math teacher for over 30 years these students are some of the best I’ve seen and one of the key facets of this is the ability of Mr. Hartman to make Math fun. I look forward to watching other clubs like our newly formed Robotics team excel in future competitions! ”
Mr. Hartman states, “I’m so proud of these gifted ‘Mathletes’. We began this contest in October 2011 and have continually sustained a ranking ahead of all local schools (public and private). To see us now in first place in the ENTIRE STATE ahead of such specialized schools as the Bronx High School of Science, Brooklyn Tech and Regis is a testament to the extra hours and hard work these students have been giving this team!”
Special mention must be given to seven members of the team who have a perfect record having answered every question correctly throughout the competition. They are seniors Nateshwar Nauth, Krislyn Schweiger and Alex Singh and juniors Charles Baldi, Mark Fougy, Zar Guye and Mya Pugh.
