Middle Village, L.I. March 27, 1883 – George Riley, a granite polisher, forty-five years old, committed suicide here to-day. He was employed in the granite yard of George Stockinger, on Metropolitan Avenue.
In the frame office building he first stabbed himself over the heart with a pair of scissors. He then cut his throat with a carving knife and fell. He still retained strength enough to apply a lighted match to a bundle of newspapers and set fire to the building.
An unsuccessful attempt was made to rescue him. The building was only partially burned. Riley was married. His wife and children live in Utica, N.Y.
