As a result of a settlement between the City and State with regard to the operation of the Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant, $7M in funding was allocated toward “green” projects along Newtown Creek. A vote was held in 2010 and one of the projects deemed a top priority was the planting of more trees for the communities that abut the Creek: West Maspeth and Long Island City in Queens and Greenpoint in Brooklyn. Juniper Berry Assistant Editor Christina Wilkinson is representing Maspeth as part of a 3-member volunteer committee that will identify suitable locations for tree plantings and bioswales near Newtown Creek.
