My dad’s street dedication will be taking place on Saturday June 21st at noon. This also happens to be my mom’s birthday which will be extra special this year. We are hoping for a nice day to celebrate my dad “block party style.” Please come join us at the intersection of 60th Road and 77th Street as we unveil John Killcommons Corner.
John J. Killcommons, 89, of Middle Village, New York, passed away peacefully on December 21st, 2023. He was born to John Killcommons and Senci (Metzger) Killcommons on February 12, 1934, in New York City. He married the love of his life, Betty (Elizabeth Buoncore) Killcommons in 1958. He is survived by her, and is by his sister, Florence Albrecht, and his children, Laurie Killcommons, Michael Killcommons, and Kelly (Killcommons) Werner, son/daughter in laws, Rich Werner, Beth Killcommons, Lorna Gottesman, and his grandchildren, Nicole Werner, Jack Killcommons, Julia Killcommons, Katie Killcommons and Sarah Killcommons. John was predeceased by his eldest son, John (Jack) Killcommons, Jr., and his brother Peter Killcommons.
He is also survived by a large and loving extended family, and friends from the neighborhood going back to grammar school, his time in the navy, the FDNY and his many winning softball teams. There are too many to name, but for John never too many share his gift of storytelling and his love of life.
John loved his family and friends, and loved to share the joy and pride he had in his neighborhood community in Queens, New York City. A lifelong resident of Middle Village, he left the neighborhood to serve in the U.S. Navy and was a Korean War veteran. He went on to serve the people of New York as a FDNY fireman working at Ladder 128 company in Long Island City for over 35 years. A gregarious and passionate sports fan, John got a lot of joy from part-time work serving as Head Usher at the US Tennis Association (USTA) and at the NY Mets baseball home field Shea Stadium in Flushing Queens for many years. He gave back to his neighborhood volunteering as the Vice President of the Juniper Park Civic Association dedicating his time and enthusiasm for parks and community affairs and was known for his column “Killy’s Corner” published in the Juniper Berry magazine. He will be remembered by his family and community holding court on his porch and was affectionately known as “the mayor of Middle Village.” John graduated from Resurrection Ascension elementary school, and attended St. Francis Prep H.S. in Brooklyn, and LaGuardia Community College in Long Island City.
