The Star-Spangled Banner is a poem.
It celebrates freedom, not war.
As the British bombarded the Harbor of Baltimore in preparation for an invasion of Maryland, Francis Scott Key laments our fate, and asks a question as he pens a poem;
“Oh, Say Can You See…”
Is our flag still flying?
All through the night he hears and witnesses our nation under fire. Come the morning,
as the clouds of smoke clear in the dawn’s
early light the flag was still there.
Francis Scott Key was so proud that we
prevailed and answers the question he asked.
Yes.
Our flag is still flying.
