The NYC Parks Department will be spending $50M on an effort to stabilize the NYS Pavilion inside Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. Designed by renowned architect Philip Johnson and built as a temporary structure for the 1964 World’s Fair, it was neglected for decades until it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008. Pieces of the towers have fallen off, the structure has thoroughly rusted, and the famous Texaco map requires intensive rehabilitation and restoration. But by the end of this year, NYC Parks hopes to have the pavilion reopened for limited tours. An electrical upgrade will once more allow the towers be lit up at night. With the current budget squeeze, this may be the last money the Pavilion sees for quite some time.
