I got to thinking of all the reasons why I still live in Middle Village. Well, for starters, I’ve been here since 1939 when I like to say I was a “fetus.” I can remember the farmer in our backyard waking us up early in the morning with his tractor working his crop. The Pullis area of Juniper was our backyard and that’s where I became the star 3rd baseman on the Chicklets.
(I can hear the groans of my teammates, but, hey, let them write their own article!)
I have seen Middle Village develop into a little “suburban” enclave surrounded by everything you will ever need to live your life! We have buses, trains, and access to one of the richest cultural sites in the world – New York City.
Let’s take a look, Middle Village is 10 minutes by car to Manhattan. Then there is the ready access to the airports, LaGuardia and JFK. We are surrounded by mass transit with a commuter bus that takes you non-stop to Manhattan and several other bus lines that gives us access to the subway on Woodhaven and Queens Boulevard and also the M train on Metropolitan Avenue. A NYC Metro Card allows you to travel all over the city on one fare.
Right here in Queens at Flushing Meadow Park we have our own home grown culture sites with the Hall of Science, the Space Museum, The Queens Theater for the Arts, ice skating, the US Tennis Open and Shea Stadium. We also have great shopping with the newly renovated and expanded Queens Center Mall, Austin Street in Forest Hills and many small “Mom” and “Pop” stores that contribute to that home town feeling. For those who like to dine out we have several fine restaurants.
There are churches, schools and synagogues that offer additional stability for the neighborhood. Many of the homes are into second and third generation ownership with children who grew up and resettled in the area. Real estate prices are through the roof, with demand far outweighing supply.
I think you get the picture and it’s easy to see how one can spend an entire lifetime in Middle Village because the area has something to offer for any age group.
