Residents of Middle Village are facing a concerning change in their neighborhood. A building project slated for 66-73 79th Place (St. Margaret’s Church rectory block) has undergone revisions, increasing from the original plan of a 3-story building with 11 units to a 5-story structure featuring 17 units, yet retaining only 11 parking spaces. This apartment building is in between two small residential houses. This significant alteration is not just an internal modification; it has broader implications for our community.
**Our Concerns:**
1. **Limited Parking**: Increasing the number of units without proportionately increasing parking spaces will strain our already limited parking facilities. This could lead to congestion on the streets, making it difficult for residents to find parking and potentially increasing the risk of accidents as frustrated drivers circle the area.
2. **Traffic and Safety Risks**: More units mean more residents, which translates to more traffic on our residential roads. This uptick in traffic can pose safety risks, particularly to pedestrians and school-going children.
3. **Neighborhood Character**: The expansion threatens to disrupt the cozy, residential feel of Middle Village. A high-rise could overshadow our smaller homes and alter the landscape we’ve all come to cherish.
