I am writing as a concerned resident of Maspeth regarding news that a cannabis dispensary is set to open in our area, reportedly within close proximity—likely a little more than 500 feet—from St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Academy. The address of the cannabis dispensary is 64-01 Grand Avenue.
Beyond the potential zoning issue (must be more than 500ft is okay – please change this too) many residents are deeply concerned about the broader impact this type of business could have on our neighborhood:
Youth exposure:
The location’s closeness to an elementary and middle school increases the likelihood that children will be exposed to marketing or clientele associated with cannabis use.
Community character: Our area has traditionally been a quiet, family-oriented community centered around the church and school. A dispensary so close by may undermine that environment.
Public safety and loitering:
Increased foot and vehicle traffic could bring noise, littering, and security challenges that local residents will ultimately have to bear.
Property values and lower enrollment:
Nearby homeowners worry this type of establishment may negatively affect property values and the overall perception of the neighborhood which may also affect school enrollment.
I fully respect the rights of licensed businesses to operate legally and safely, but this location appears inappropriate given its proximity to children and families. I urge you to review the permit and zoning details of this dispensary and advocate for its relocation to a more suitable commercial area.
Thank you for your time, attention, and service to our community. I appreciate your help in ensuring our neighborhood remains safe and family friendly.
Sincerely,
Evelyn Hernandez-Leon
