The Newtown Historical Society was founded this year with its primary focus being the saving of St. Saviour’s Church and the teaching of neighborhood history throughout areas that were part of Newtown Township prior to Queens County’s incorporation into New York City in 1898. Newtown Township was comprised of land bordered by Newtown Creek to the west, the Flushing River to the east, Long Island Sound to the north and the Jamaica and Brooklyn borders to the south. Exhibits and walking tours are being planned for upcoming months.
A provisional charter was granted by the State of New York Board of Regents this past May, and a bank account has been set up to accept donations.
