In what can only be described as ridiculous pettiness, Middle Village and Maspeth homeowners who co-own community driveways are refusing to shovel the snow that accumulates along them as well as the sidewalks they cross. And because of this, every time it snows, they pull their cars out of their garages and park on the street, meaning fewer parking spaces for everyone else in the neighborhood. Community driveways are the responsibility of everyone on the block, and if someone were to slip and fall where a driveway crosses the public sidewalk, all homeowners in the row would be held liable by the courts. When the homes were built decades ago, the architects certainly didn’t foresee silly squabbles over who should do the shoveling in the winter. Be a good neighbor and at least volunteer to clear the sidewalks. We’re talking about a stretch that’s about 8 feet wide!
