If you’ve traveled down Rust Street at any point in the last 9 months or so, you certainly noticed this camper and bus parked along it. These types of vehicles are all over western Maspeth and many of them are in really poor condition. Some are being lived in, but others appear to just be used as junk storage, with some of the junk spilling out onto the sidewalks. These vehicles are not street legal, but the NYPD’s hands are tied since they contain personal belongings and in some cases are being used as homes. There is a lengthy process involving multiple city agencies that must be followed in order to get them removed and this is simply not a priority for the de Blasio administration. These vehicles make for unsafe living spaces, our streets are not zoned for residential purposes, and the eyesores will likely continue for a long time to come.
