In Recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Maspeth High School Made Sure to Help Join the Fight in a Multitude of Ways. To start, the Maspeth High School Athletics Department participated in the Making Strides Breast Cancer walk on October 17th at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. Over 50 student-athletes, representing 17 teams, coaches, and community members came together to raise just shy of $1,000.00. The top fundraiser was Amaya Redden, a member of the girls JV Volleyball team, who raised $315.13 for the cause.
Additionally, during the school day on October 20th, Maspeth High School’s Physical Education & Health Department invited SHAREing and CAREing to speak and educate the entire student body on Breast Cancer Awareness, particularly the importance of self-checks and preventative care. SHAREing and CAREing is a not-for-profit organization working with community members to provide education and wellness, links to cancer treatment and practical needs, and ongoing counseling support. All services are free of charge.
Finally, in the afternoon of that same day Maspeth High School hosted a Student versus Staff Volleyball fundraiser tournament to raise money for breast cancer awareness. The event involved students, staff, parents and community members. Custom t-shirts were sold, and all proceeds went towards the SHAREing and CAREing organization.
Assistant Principal Jesse Pachter and Athletic Director Shawn Baumann stated: “We are so proud of the students, staff, school, and community for raising funds and awareness for such an important cause. Our Maspeth Community continues to make a difference.”
