The City Council approved a rezoning that would allow a massive building to be constructed in a low-rise area in Elmhurst at 78-01 Queens Blvd despite protests held by small businesses in the area that fear for their livelihood and residents wary of gentrification. Apex Development Group said their 13-story project would include 314 dwelling units, with 79 of those designated as “permanently affordable.” They also agreed to build a community swimming pool with a non-profit providing free swim lessons. The site sits in Council Member Shekar Krishnan’s district.
