The City Council voted 47-1 in September to force homeowners to hire master plumbers or specially qualified handymen to install gas ovens, dryers, and other appliances. This can cost up to $500. Store technicians, building supers, contractors and homeowners had been installing these themselves safely for decades, but the excuse for this was to prevent another explosion like the one caused by an illegally split line in 2015, which had nothing to do with appliances. So, yet another solution in search of a problem. Obviously, this cost will be passed onto renters, but this council doesn’t seem to care about that.
