I love the holiday season, but for me when it’s over, it’s over. Others, such as my husband, prefer to prolong it and play holiday music into February and beyond.
If you have this situation at home, here’s a compromise: Make a ‘Winter’ playlist that contains music that can carry you deep into the coldest months.
The following songs have a festive winter theme and have long been considered “Christmas songs,” but don’t mention Christmas at all.
There are modern winter-themed songs that aren’t considered to be holiday songs (‘Hazy Shade of Winter’ comes to mind), but the ones presented here have become the seasonal classics that we all know and love. Enjoy them. Spring will be here before we know it.
• Jingle Bells: Ah, yes, jingle bells. The song is about a drunken horse race in winter. Fun to listen to when there’s fresh powder on the ground.
• Jingle Bell Rock: Modern version of Jingle Bells. Keeps the sleigh, horse, and snow.
• Sleigh Ride: Yet more horses, snow, and sleighs. Doesn’t mention Christmas, but rather a birthday party at the home of Farmer Gray.
• Frosty the Snowman: Also a solid winter song choice. Focused on a snowman coming to life, having a grand time with the local kids, and then leaving town before he melts.
• Winter Wonderland: A celebration of winter sights and sounds. First song on the list to mention a fireplace. Features a snowman preacher marrying the people who create him. Winter weddings are awesome!
• Let It Snow: Mentions a fire right in the opening verse. First song to focus on staying indoors rather than enjoying the outdoors in the cold. Going outdoors actually is something the singer doesn’t want to do because he/she leaves their loved one behind.
• Baby, It’s Cold Outside: Also focuses on staying indoors. Starring a lady who says she needs to go home but doesn’t really want to, and a guy trying his best to get her to stay. Became controversial because younger generations think “Hey, what’s in this drink?” means the guy was trying to slip the gal a mickey when that was just her making a winking joke back at him.
• I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm: This one has a snowstorm, a fire, and a love affair. What more could one ask for in a winter song?
• Good King Wenceslas: A song about a tenth-century king of Bohemia who was sainted because of his good deeds. Christmas is not mentioned, but a holiday that closely follows – the Feast of Stephen – is. It tells the tale of how the king visited a peasant in a snowstorm to provide alms. A story to find inspiration from.
